Today’s modern disposals are designed to last 8 to 15 years. Here’s what to consider before buying.

Horsepower. The standard garbage disposal will have 3/4 horsepower. Super strong models that can chop up even the toughest vegetable husks can have as much as 1 horsepower. Compact models, which save on under-the-sink space, are available, but don’t opt for one below 1/2 horsepower. It will likely get stuck regularly and need to be replaced in just a few years.

Continuous feed or batch feed. Typical continuous feed garbage disposals are turned on by a switch located near the kitchen sink. Batch-feed models work by inserting a stopper or rod-like key into the drain. Both styles equally grind up the food, but households with young children may prefer the batch feed as a way to prevent them from accidentally hitting the disposal switch.

Noise. Garbage disposals are like hungry monsters, they’re not very quiet. And under stainless steel sinks, they can be even louder if not insulated well. However, as a rule, the fatter the disposal, the quieter it runs. So opt for the fattest disposal that will fit properly under your sink.
